Greenville, PA's Non-Kill Animal Shelter.
STRAYHAVEN, PAST AND PRESENT
Our History
In the early fifties, there was no Strayhaven Animal Shelter, only a group of caring people, who rescued strays, keeping them in their homes until the dogs and cats could find a loving home. In 1960, this dedicated group decided it was impractical and impossible to keep all the animals in their homes, and Strayhaven Animal Shelter was built and incorporated.
A retired gentleman by the name of Perry Dehart, donated the land and his time to build the shelter. With help from concerned citizens and some government loans, the shelter was completed.
One-time Board member Mary Jane Zahniser undertook payment to spay and neuter all dogs and cats. After her death in 1983, this responsibility fell back onto the shelter. Eventually, participating veterinarians offered to the shelter, a discount for each dog and cat to be spayed or neutered.
Today, every dog and cat receives Veterinary Exam, Heartworm Test, Feline Leukemia/FIV Test, Flea Treatment, Rabies Vaccine & Routine Shots and are Microchip and Spayed/Neutered before being adopted. Much of our support comes from the community and local businesses.
The average cost to operate the shelter is over $150,000 per year, which is why we rely so heavily on donations! Along with monetary donations, we are always looking for volunteers to help with walking, socializing, and cleaning.
